SPORTS NUTRITION © Patricia Niland 2005 To realise potential, it is vital that an athlete has the
ability to train consistently. Successful training, over time,
builds a stronger, faster, more efficient body which will
hopefully go on to produce optimum athletic performances. Time
lost due to ill health, is time that a competitive athlete
cannot afford to lose. In the long term the athlete and his/her
coach needs to be conscientious about their own ‘care' and
acknowledge that they have a responsibility for the training and
nutrition factors within their control, both of which can
influence success or failure. Illness can have profound effects on an athletes mental
perspective, causing loss of rythym and habit. Once recovered
the athlete may need to mentally regain focus. Maintaining a
healthy immune system is therefore a considerable factor in the
athletes pursuit of success. Moderate exercise has been demonstrated to have beneficial
effects on the immune system, reducing the risk of colds and
chest infections. However for ...

Many athletes go through their sporting career without ever reaching their full potential. Many realize that being a successful athlete requires more than just practicing the necessary skills for their sport.
How is Success Defined? Success is the ability of the athlete to achieve a high level of performance every time they are in a competitive situation. It is the ability to consistently produce their best performance day after day and to continually improve. It is also the ability to maintain a high level of performance when faced with various challenges whether from within or from an external source.
Being successful means being able to consistently perform each required skill at a level that is demanded of the athlete when in battle. Success is achieving goals and then formulating longer term goals to be achieved.
Success is often defined by an athlete's results over their career. Success in sports should not ...

Maximum power is trained when the athlete works in a range of between 95-100% of their maximum intensity. All too often athletes perform these power training drills at a low intensity thus defeating the purpose of overloading the muscles and maximizing you time spent training. Plyometrics has become the standard for power development with many trainers.
Power is simply the combination of speed and strength. In recent years many athletes and coaches have thought of power training as plyometric training due to the popularity of the term. However, plyometric training is just one form of power training. Plyometric training refers to an athlete developing explosive movements through a concentric contraction (shortening of muscle) following an eccentric contraction (lengthening of muscle).
It is during this eccentric contraction that the maximum force generated by the muscle is attained. The amount of force generated by the muscles following an eccentric contraction is greater. How ...

Why are we drawn to sports? It is because we appreciate and take pleasure in witnessing the human spirit in motion. Athletes competing and achieving despite difficulties inspires us all. It is a reality TV show in its best. Sometimes, we can't help asking what sort of "all in one sports nutrition" they are taking. It's heartwarming to us those ordinary mortals, after years of training and hard work had triumphed against all odds. We know that these athletes had worked hard to develop their physical skills. We can't help but be one in their triumphs and empathize in their defeats. But surely this privilege is only for the professional athletes who have all the time in the world to engage in sports and sustain this with appropriate nutrition? Not necessarily true. For people juggling a delicate balance between their busy life and their need for physical health, all in ...

A real or ace athlete is not only athletic; his life revolves around sports.
Though in and out of formal training for official events, he is always in self-training. Once an ace athlete, always an ace athlete; a real call to athletics is irrevocable. You not only train hard but, as the jokes state, you die training.
...But to be sure, the first step to becoming an ace athlete is to be an athlete first and decide to remain an athlete for life. You must determine with your heart and mind what sport you are going to pursue for the rest of your life.
Birth of an Ace Athlete
The moment you fall in love with a sport activity, the athlete in you is born. It starts in your mind. You may have read a sports book or a blurb in the sports section of a newspaper, or have watched a sports event on ...

Scouting for good players to join your sports team can be tough. Natural born athletes are a rare find. Luckily, there’s always a good chance in finding that star athlete early on. They usually turn up as early as their high school days. However, finding a star athlete is not the hard part; getting him to sign up for YOUR sports team is. This is maybe due to the fact that a lot of the other sports team wants him on their team as well or that he doesn’t want to pursue a career in sports after high school. Whatever the reason may be, your job as a recruiter is to convince that star athlete that you have the best offer and he should sign up for your team. To accomplish this, there are some basic things that you need to keep in mind. Get to know him. This doesn’t ...

Most athletes are born competitors. Since our early years, we have been conditioned to think in terms of "how many," "how much" and "how fast." The cruel twist of fate parallels the wisdom of age with the slowing of the fast-twitch muscles. The athlete who wishes to retain enjoyment in his older years needs cunning as well as brawn to do well, feel well, and be well!
Our primal instincts regarding the ever-upward ascent of our achievements have to withstand the changes in absolute measure (hardly any of us will be faster at sixty than we were at twenty, or even forty). We have to learn to take pride in finesse, in working with our changing bodies in a cooperative dance rather than a wrestling match, and to do so with the fond eye of a lover rather than the stopwatch of our high school coach.
How can we find ...
