The most significant event however that triggered the game to its current level of fame was occasioned in 1823 when William Webb Ellis, while playing a football game, held the ball by the hands and ran forward with the ball towards the opposition’s goal. That feat was unprecedented in football and marked the beginning of present-day rugby football. There are a number of versions of the game. Chief among these is the fact that the ball is prolate-spheroid or oval. It can be kicked in any direction or passed from one player to the next only by throwing it backwards. That essentially means that to gain ground, a player has to kick the ball forward or run some distance before passing it backward to a teammate who then does the same. On the other hand, rugby is game that is exclusively played on open outdoor grass fields. Depending on the nature ...

England being top ranked team has been making tactful strategies for defending and attacking positions as Coach Martin Johnson has done two changes in the team for the Six Nations clash with Wales, with recall of flanker Joe Worsley and centre Mike Tindall. Joe Worley may have great nation’s confrontations as before this, he seems unlucky fellow who has also missed last match 36-11 win against Italy due to back injury, and he is still named as out centre in place of Jamie Noon, and expects to establish partnership with Riki Flutey. This experienced pair played with superb performance in England's 2003 World Cup and won the title of winning squad. This time, they are looking to add some leadership and directional guidelines to Johnson's side following his mind boggling performance over Italy in last weekend match.Worsley is generally considered as a blindside flanker at the side of his club Wasps ...

Rugby is considered to be one of the most violent sports activities. Rugby traumas and injuries can sometimes be very serious, since this game demands a high amount of physical energy. Known rugby injuries include shoulder, knee and ankle joint injuries, concussion and spinal injury. The most dangerous is the spinal cord injury – although it is rare, its results may be catastrophic.
The reasons which lead to injuries of rugby players are numerous – some refer to the nature of the game, other are more general. Lack of playing and training time may result in more or less serious injuries. One of the common reasons is the lack of a technique, of specific information, explaining how to protect the player’s body from being injured.
Since rugby is a contact sport, injury risks are related to physical contact, primarily in tackle. Most rugby accidents involve the players’ arms and hands, shoulders ...

Rugby Shirts in Fashion People in all walks of life have particular taste for fashion. Some of them prefer to wear any casual attire while others would like to be sporty, wearing sports apparel that they are most interested in. In the UK, you wouldn’t be surprised to see people wearing rugby shirts during weekends on the park or in shopping areas. This simply goes to say that they are still interested in rugby despite the fact that football has gained much popularity in modern times. The common adage in UK that says “football is a gentleman’s game played by ruffians and rugby is a ruffian’s game played by gentlemen” is quite a stereotype on its own. Perhaps it’s because of the fact that most men in middle to upper class play the rugby that this adage has become real. Yet, it cannot be denied that there are still ...

A person who has a passion for the sports would do anything or get anything to be close to the sport, even if it means wearing anything that is associated with it. Rugby is the historical sport of football. The sport is played by certain classes in the UK. In the UK, for example, rugby is played by the middle and upper classes and is considered as an establishment sport. For other areas like Wales, however, they are mostly played by workers in small villages. Whatever the status of those who play rugby, it remains a fact that the sports have not been totally replaced by football and there are still plenty of rugby enthusiasts out there who still enjoy the game and have preserved the rules amidst the popularity of football. ...

Rugby shirts or Jerseys are knitted garments worn by rugby league and rugby union players. Like majority of sports jerseys, rugby shirts normally have the team logo on the chest area and the team player’s number on the back. Rugby shirts that are not used in competitive plays sometimes waive this option. Sponsorship labels are usually placed on the abdominal area of the rugby shirt. Design usually contains five or six horizontal stripes called “hoops” in alternating colors. These differ from football shirts which commonly have vertical stripes. Rugby shirts were customarily made of cotton but other teams now wear polyester and still others choose to mix cotton and synthetic fabrics. Polyester is the most common choice basically because it is more “slippery” than cotton or cotton blend which makes it harder to latch onto by potential tacklers. Even though tackling is considered illegal during the game, this is ...

The England Rugby Squad left on Monday for the Rugby World Cup that is about to take place in France. The squad took the 75-minute flight to think about all the hopes on being the first team in 20 years to retain the title.
England has had a chain of humiliating losses since beating Australia in the 2003 final and has sunk to seventh in the world rankings. Even with 13 players in its squad who were at the last tournament, the team is rated as low as a 33-1 shot to win the title.
"The French games proved the level we are at is not good enough," captain Phil Vickery said at Heathrow airport. "But we are not far away. We will go to France and give a good account of ourselves."
The team has been trying to adapt to the faster dynamic game played by the title contender New Zealand, while ...

Saville won the Booker Prize in 1976. In such a vast novel it is inevitable that the pace will occasionally quicken and slacken, but a book like this can be read over weeks, almost dipped into as the passing phases of Colin’s life unfold. David Story was born in Wakefield, and so was I. It could be argued that his most famous and perhaps still most successful work is “This Sporting Life”, a portrait of a Rugby League player who achieves local fame and then notoriety as his life and career blossom and then fall apart. It was filmed in the early 1960s, with Richard Harris playing the starring role. Along with about 28000 others, I was in Wakefield Trinity’s Belle Vue ground soon after midday to make sure that I got a standing place by the railings next to the pitch to see Trinity play Wigan in a cup-tie. ...

Attention rubgy fans! Are you an aficionado of "the ruffian's game played by gentlemen?" Are you thinking about heading to France for the 2007 Rugby World Cup? Surely you want to be on hand to see if England will keep their champion standing, or watch as some other country wrests the top spot away from them. France, Australia, and New Zealand were right in there for the 2003 Cup; they will surely be back in force. And who knows? There is always the possibility that a team could come out of nowhere and prevail. No way you want to miss any of that action!
If the thought has turned into a definite plan to attend some if not all of the September 7-October 20 mega-event, you better get your tickets (one place you can try is the main event site at www.france2007.fr). But don't stop there! Now is also the time ...

Rugby Union is a very demanding game, placing very rigorous demands on players physical and mental attributes. Most amateur players however perform very poorly in respect of rugby-specific fitness tests, due predominantly to poor training habits and lack of correct skills training by coaches. It's stop-start nature demands that players have high levels of speed and explosive power, as well as having the ability to recover quickly between sprints. Rugby is such a simple game - score more tries than your opponents. To achieve this, your team must win possession of the ball by dominating lineouts, scrums, rucks and mauls, and every other facet of the game where the ball is contested. For YOU to dominate a game, you need to be competent in the skills of evasive running, kicking, passing, catching and tackling. Strength is an obvious requirement to play the game, however it is not the only goal ...

Raphael Ibanez will once again lead his country into a Rugby World Cup in September, eight years after he led his team to the final in 1999 against Australia.
He retired from international rugby in 2003 after the World Cup semi-final defeat against England, after giving the captain title to Fabien Pelous after the 1999 final which France lost 37-12.
Fabien Pelous has struggled with a knee injury ever since tearing ligaments in the 2004 Heineken Cup final, and is still fighting with it as the 2007 World Cup approaches.
Ibanez came out of retirement in 2005, and helped France to Six Nations title in 2006, before assuming the captaincy again in Pelous's absence for the 2007 Six nations which France also won.
Ibanez also paid tribute to his friend, Fabien Pelous, from whom he now formally takes over the captaincy. "Fabien has had a tough season. He has been injured for ...

The Bledisloe Cup is a Rugby Union tournament, played between the Australian Wallabies and New Zealand All Blacks since 1931, although there is some dispute regarding this. While the Australian Rugby Union is of the opinion that the first match was played as a one-off in 1931, the New Zealand Rugby Union opines that the first match was played in 1932 when New Zealand toured Australia. The cup gets its name from the man who donated the trophy – Lord Bledisloe, the Governor–General of New Zealand in 1931. The silver trophy designed by Nelson Isaac in New Zealand and crafted by Walker and Hall in London is the largest trophy in world rugby. The Bledisloe Cup has seen frequent changes in all the years it has been played. From 1931 to1981 is was contested irregularly with New Zealand winning 19 times and Australia 4 times. Australia’s victories include ...

Spain was only one step to win over Romania, one of the teams that recently participated in the 2007 France World Championship ranked seventh amongst the European powerhouses disputing the Rugby Six Nations tournament.
The Romanian team has clearly been a strong force as they have won twenty-four of the twenty-five games played in the tournament; the team is completely renewed after the Rugby World Championship.
During the first part of the game the Spaniard team played one of their best games in the last seasons; being able to take advantage over the Romanians, but remained without forces in the second part. At the end they did not know how to pull through their best tricks despite the rival had one less player.
The Romanian forward always kept one step ahead of the Spaniard player. Gratton failed two blows and a transformation in the first part but overall the Spaniards knew ...

Nutrition has a big role in improving performance in sport. Having a good nutritional plan aids your performance a great deal. Eating the right stuff to enable you to perform at your best is not hard but, just like any other diet, you need some discipline. Training to play rugby, whether ball skills, aerobic or anaerobic fitness, contact skills or resistance training requires high levels of energy to perform; as do matches. Most of the required energy should come from carbohydrates. You should eat foods low in the Glycaemic Index (GI) and either a protein blend or Casein, egg or soy protein early in the day before exercise. This will provide you with slow release energy you need throughout the day as well as providing you with a slow release protein. Just before exercise, you should consume high GI foods as well as high amounts of Whey Protein. ...

The French were able to scrape their way to a victory in their opening 2009 Six Nations match. They scored a 22-13 win over Scotland at the Stade de France last Saturday, but it wasn’t an impressive performance. Now France coach Marc Lievremont has to figure out how to get his team to play better of they will be in significant trouble against the powerful red tide from Wales. The French sides are underdogs in this Six Nations match up, as expected, but the debate rages on about their level of play and the game plan employed by the coaching staff. Punters are not feeling very confident. France can make the necessary adjustments, as sports books report money flowing in on the Welsh side. Lievremont, who took over from Bernard Laporte in late 2007 after the last World Cup, stated \"On the very day when our forward play and our ...

The eagerly-awaited Rugby World Cup kicks off on Friday, 7th September when hosts France take on fast-improving Argentina at the Stade de France in Paris. The mood in France is that they are hoping to repeat the surprise win that their football cousins managed at the soccer World Cup in 1998. But, win or lose, the French are working very hard to ensure that all visiting rugby fans will be made warmly welcome as they aim to impress with their tournament organisation and general hospitality.
Defending world champions England will be hoping to put recent dismal performances behind them and turn on the style for the competition which sees them in a qualifying pool pitted against Samoa, Tonga, USA and the mighty South Africa. However, the bookies think the team doesn’t have a hope quoting England at 28-1 to repeat their 2003 triumph and making them sixth favourites for the trophy. ...

A Rugby union match of Guinness Premiership had taken place at Adams Park on 22 February at daytime 3:00 pm between Northampton and Wasps. Wasps had been doing hard work for many days to get dominance over Northampton. They had made two changes at their side to come up with strong stand up team to face Northampton in that match. Rob Webber replaced Joe Ward. Some replacements were also done to bring positive livescores. Finally after forceful fight, Wasps got victory over Northampton with 9-5 lead. A forceful striker, Danny Cipriani, who omitted from England's RBS 6 Nations side, kicked the three penalties which helped Wasps to earn a Guinness Premiership victory over Northampton. But Danny Cipriani seemed eclipsed by the exciting young player of Northampton who managed to score only in one try in the match. Another player Foded came in place of Johnson took pass from Stephen to ...

Well the new Stade Francais’s rugby kit is causing a stir! Made by Adidas, it is covered in repeat block colour images of Blanche de Castille, France’s thirteenth century ruler, complete with crown. The design is clearly reminiscent of Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe prints. Personally I quite like it, not sure it’ll look quite the same filled with a large French rugby player, but as a garment it works. The colours and design are strong and eye-catching. The contrast darker sleeves and side panels help to counteract the bright colour blocks and slim the figure and tone down the overall appearance of the garment so that it isn’t quite so garish. It certainly opens up a whole new area of sportswear design for those of us who have had the task of trying to come up with a new way of introducing team colours in various panels, piping ...

In recent times, the implications of the Crisis on sports, rugby included, has began to show. Teams have started to feel the pinch and many have started taking measures to brace for the looming tough times ahead. While every rugby team aims to crown their season with some sort of silverware to mark their success, more and more teams are becoming wary when it comes to signing new players. This is due to the high transfer fees demanded for players.Continental GloryAs a result of this, club coaches are making do with what they have, even at the expense of continental glory. Rugby clubs in Europe seem to be more concerned with maintaining their top flight status in their domestic rugby leagues and less concerned with concurring the continent. And can you blame them? To win a continental trophy like the Heineken Cup requires a team to have depth in the squad. ...

Australian Rugby sure needs to take a good hard look at itself. The results over the last few years on the International arena have been poor to say the least.
In 2006 the formally mighty Wallabies produced dismal results against some of the world's lower ranked northern hemisphere teams.
The new coach John Connolly, who took over from ousted Australian coach Edie Jones, has managed to reproduce the same dismal results by doing more of the same.
It was clear to many a fanatical Wallabies supporter that every time they had thrown the game away and bought on the reserves such as Matt Rogers the team lifted and actually started scoring.
Why the coaching staff never picked up on this is beyond belief after all trying the same thing time and time again and expecting a different result is surly a form of insanity.
The team always ...

After a number of cities and locations put in bids to host USA Rugby Championship Series events, final decisions have been made as to where a number of championship events will be held in 2008. One of the biggest changes to the schedule will be the move to centralize all preliminary levels of the collegiate playoffs. In past years, the first rounds of the collegiate national tournament, for both men and women, were held in different locations across the country which did not allow for “on the bubble” teams to plan trips far in advance. For 2008, the first rounds will be held in Albuquerque, N.M., at the Balloon Fiesta Park. The semifinals and the finals of the collegiate playoffs will be held in their usual home of Stanford, Calif., in May of 2008. The men’s national club playoffs will be held in Austin, Tex., at the Austin ...
