SPORTS NUTRITION © Patricia Niland 2005 To realise potential, it is vital that an athlete has the
ability to train consistently. Successful training, over time,
builds a stronger, faster, more efficient body which will
hopefully go on to produce optimum athletic performances. Time
lost due to ill health, is time that a competitive athlete
cannot afford to lose. In the long term the athlete and his/her
coach needs to be conscientious about their own ‘care' and
acknowledge that they have a responsibility for the training and
nutrition factors within their control, both of which can
influence success or failure. Illness can have profound effects on an athletes mental
perspective, causing loss of rythym and habit. Once recovered
the athlete may need to mentally regain focus. Maintaining a
healthy immune system is therefore a considerable factor in the

However, a new phrase is gaining prominence in the sporting news and that is "technology doping". This term was introduced to describe competitive advantage using sports equipment.
Obviously, athletes use sports equipment. Having customized equipment along with proper preparation of the equipment is an important part of competing in an event. But would anyone make the argument that Tiger Woods won his numerous golf tournaments because of the Nike clubs he used? No, because it's the athlete that receives the glory for sporting achievements and his sponsors come along for the ride.

College recruitment of student-athletes started in the 1880s as college football began its transition from an extracurricular activity to a highly commercialized sport. Prior to the turn of the century, compensation for collegiate athletes usually took the form of employment, free lodging (often at the home of a coach or supporter), meals, gifts and other special favors. Primarily funded by a school’s alumni and fraternities, incentives were offered to entice players to choose a particular school and to perform at the highest level possible. Most of the time, the promise of compensation was verbal, with players being assured they would be well taken care of, according to authors Penny Hastings and Todd Caven in the book, “How To Win A Sports Scholarship.”
The popularity of college football grew quickly and a new industry—college stadium construction—was born. Many institutions around the country built gigantic structures to house the fast-growing sport. These stadia, ...

There still exists considerable confusion and controversy regarding the protein requirements for athletesparticularly for those who are involved in high-intensity training. Even scientists have disagreed on exact protein requirements, and thus many strength and conditioning professionals who desire muscular enhancement in their athletes have increased their protein intake well beyond the recommended daily allowance (RDA). Much of the confusion arises from poorly designed research studies and a lack of understanding of protein metabolism, resulting in recommendations that are unnecessary and occasionally harmful. Proteins are complex molecules that have many enzymatic and structural functions related to the promotion of body growth, maintenance, and repair. The function of dietary protein in the athlete, fitness enthusiast, or sedentary individual is to contribute the amino acids necessary for the body to assimilate proteins that comprise skeletal structures (including muscle) and hormones, function as cell membrane receptors, and maintain fluid balance. SPORTS NUTRITION © Patricia Niland 2005
To realise potential, it is vital that an athlete has the
ability to train consistently.
Maintaining a
healthy immune system is therefore a considerable factor in the
athletes pursuit of success.
Moderate exercise has been demonstrated to have beneficial
effects on the immune system, reducing the risk of ...

Many ...

The function of dietary protein in the athlete, fitness enthusiast, or sedentary individual is to contribute the amino acids necessary for the body to assimilate proteins that comprise skeletal structures (including muscle) and ...

What factors might prompt young athletes to drop out? First of all, they might be playing for the wrong reasons—because a parent or coach wants them to play. Ultimately, playing to make someone else happy doesn't make the athlete happy.
Second, they may feel too much pressure to perform. When kids feel too much pressure, they often under-perform. Their confidence and happiness may sink.
Third, peers, parents and coaches may expect too much of young athletes—especially talented athletes. High expectations can undermine athletes' confidence and happiness.

Maximum power is trained when the athlete works in a range of between 95-100% of their maximum intensity. The key to success for any sports program is to carefully plan and implement a well designed and structured training plan.
To do this, several steps need to be followed in order for this to happen successfully:
Design a general plan following the various phases of the season. By doing this, you will be able to carefully plan specific areas to work on depending on which season you are in (pre-season, competitive, post- season). This will also allow athletes to clearly see a structured program that you have set in place for them.
Set specific goals for that particular phase and then create structured training sessions for that period of time (e.g. developing endurance in the pre-season). Experienced coaches know when to change from one training phase to another. For example, strength training is needed before power or plyometrics training. Flexibility is needed before speed training.

They extolled her virtues and told the coaches why they would be lucky to have her on their team. Jane didn't call the coaches herself; Jane also didn't get recruited.
College coaches are often put off by over enthusiastic, too forward parents. They say they want the student-athlete to make the contact instead.
Chris Bates, head men's lacrosse coach at Drexel University in Pennsylvania, was quoted by authors Penny Hastings and Todd Caven in their book, How To Win A Sports Scholarship (Redwood Creek Publishing, 2007, $24.95, www.winasportsscholarship.com), "I can appreciate parents wanting the best for their child, but sometimes they are overbearing and don't realize that they're putting their son ...

There have been relatively few legal opinions about litigation between athletic trainers, competitive athletes and sports accidents or injuries. However the courts have recognized that a duty does exist between the parties.
An athletic trainer's responsibility, similar to that of a team physician, is to protect the health and safety of all the athletes. In the case of an athletic trainer who is treating an athlete with an injury, several legal duties exist as a result of the athletic trainer/athlete relationship.
There are a number of potential recognized legal duties of a trainer or a team physician. These duties include that they need to:
* Properly assess the athlete's condition
* Provide or obtain proper medical treatment
* Provide clearance to participate
*Inform the athlete of the risks of athletic participation given the particular medical condition
Legal Duty
There have also been a number of legal cases that have focused on the duty of the athletic trainer to ...

Athletic performance is greatly related to nutrition. Sports nutrition deals with study and practise of nutrition in relation to athletic performance. This branch of study deals with studying and providing nutrition requirements to an athletic based upon his body and athletic requirements. This is regarded as a specialized branch of study because an athlete performance depends upon the nutrition and food intake. This branch or field of study describes and studies the nutrition requirements of the athlete thereby giving the athlete the nutrition requirements which he should full fill so that he and his body stays in great form. We all know about the craziness which a sports star has in this 20th generation. Sports nutrition is very important because it decides the fitness level of the sports star. Sports nutrition is considered in endurance (cycling, running, etc) and strength sports (weight lifting and body building). These sports chiefly concentrate ...

There are many of you have watched television and sports in particular. As you watch these sports programs you will notice that the athletes are only one part of the sports team. To make sure that these individuals are performing to their ultimate level there are numerous other people. These are the trainers and supporters. There are doctors and other people who are all involved in seeing that the athlete has all of the mental, emotional and physical stability that is needed for competitions. Sport psychology plays a part at these various sporting events.
Unlike other branches of psychology, sports psychology deals with the way in which athletes handle the stresses of sports. The psychologists and coaches can work together to bring the athlete’s performance level up to competition status. The information that a coach provides will help the psychologist draw a picture of the mental and behavioral patterns that ...

A real or ace athlete is not only athletic; his life revolves around sports.
Though in and out of formal training for official events, he is always in self-training. Once an ace athlete, always an ace athlete; a real call to athletics is irrevocable. You not only train hard but, as the jokes state, you die training.
...But to be sure, the first step to becoming an ace athlete is to be an athlete first and decide to remain an athlete for life. You must determine with your heart and mind what sport you are going to pursue for the rest of your life.
Birth of an Ace Athlete
The moment you fall in love with a sport activity, the athlete in you is born. It starts in your mind. You may have read a sports book or a blurb in the sports section of a newspaper, or have watched a sports event on ...

You don’t have to hang up your soccer cleats or trade in your tennis racket when your school days are over. By choosing a career in a sports-related field you can stay in the game indefinitely.
People who love athletics can work in areas as diverse as medicine, management, marketing, manufacturing and many other sports-occupational areas. Prospects are increasing as more people play and watch sports. With the explosion of sports for women and girls, entire industries have sprung up, such as women’s clothing and equipment. In other careers--like sports journalism and sports administration and sports training--opportunities for women to participate in previously male-dominated have, if not leveled the playing field, at least greatly expanded it.
There are over six million jobs in sports-related careers, according to Donna Lopiano, executive director of the Women’s Sports Foundation. While many of these jobs take special education and training, entry-level positions exist for young men ...

Sports Conditioning offers an edge over the competition. The purpose of sports conditioning is to complement current sports training. Sports conditioning is more demanding than general fitness training. Sports conditioning is ideal for children who strive for greater performance in any sporting activity. It is meant to enhance an individual’s strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, speed, and power, which can be carried over into all sports.
Athletes perform exercises with weights, fitness bands, medicine balls, bodyweight, etc. Athletes and coaches are constantly seeking an advantage over the competition to help them achieve an edge. Many teams and athletes can gain an edge over the competition through intense sports conditioning programs. A good sports conditioning program incorporates specific skills into strength and conditioning to help athlete target specific performance requirements.
Besides improved performance, the conditioning program is an important step in injury prevention. Many athletes are not aware that ...

As you know, I am a physician. It's part of my profession to keep abreast of what's happening in medical /health research. GPS technology was originally invented for military use. However, over the years and with the advances made, the GPS navigational device has made its way into athletic sports. While the technology has been utilized in running and biking for some time, it is now being used in some sports that may surprise you. Many athletes have started using GPS sports technology in skating, skiing, distance swimming, and even windsurfing!Garmin has introduced the Garmin Forefunner designed primarily for runners, and the Garmin Edge for bicyclists. These units are incredibly accurate alternatives to the standard heart monitors and pedometers used in the past by athletes, trainers and coaches. Many are using GPS sports technology to track time and distance when performing long, open-water swims. There is also an obvious safety component in using a GPS when one is in a wide expanse of ocean all alone! In addition, by using a GPS ...

by Chris Channing You may not know it, but when you view any sports competition, you are viewing the very best in shoe wear. Some companies spend millions in endorsing their products via athletes, such as the Puma company has done. This goes to show that some shoe manufacturers are to be more likely to create a better shoe than others. Puma has seen much of their success from their ability to make a good shoe for many different applications. While they are most known for their puma soccer shoes, Puma has been a favorite among those who play golf, participate in different motor sports, and even for those who enjoy sailing. As a result, the company has much knowledge in what a shoe should be. Just because athletes are popularizing the act of wearing Puma shoes, the company has made great strides in giving the average consumer a good reason for ...

Today female athletes are "in." It has not always been that way. A generation ago most girls and women were called "tomboys" if they wanted to participate in sports, especially team sports with physical contact. But now it is commonplace for girls to play catch with their fathers while their mothers are off playing soccer or softball...or ice hockey. As little girls grow into women encouraged to be physically active, their self-confidence and skills grow and they find increased opportunities to use their athletic talents. One way that today's female athletes benefit is by playing sports in college and by getting scholarships to help pay for the exorbitant costs of a college education.
According to the book "How To Win A Sports Scholarship," by Penny Hastings and Todd Caven, nearly 167,000 females played collegiate sports in the 2005-06 school year. Many of them were on full or partial scholarships.
Unfortunately, certain myths ...

What does it take to have “the perfect game?” Every athlete of any sport knows what those three words mean, and they may spend their entire career trying to have that one flawless performance. Many young athletes have trouble with consistency in sports performances, and have no clue why. They may come into the season in great shape, possessing the well-refined skills that there sport requires, having a solid game plan intact, having eaten well and getting antiquate sleep all week, but still having inconsistency during competition. What is the missing ingredient? The answer lies within the skull. Sports psychology is one of the most overlooked and underrated aspects of sports performances. Many psychological factors, such as memory, focus, arousal level, anxiety and stress can drastically effect a sports performance. Attention in Sport According to William James, attention is “the taking possession by mind in clear and vivid form, of ...

This particular type of athletic footwear gives greater traction and stability for those playing serious sports. Because of the differences in playing surface, movements made, and other factors one simply cannot wear the same style of cleat for every sport. In football, soccer, and baseball you will require three different styles of cleats just for those sports alone.

One of my mental coaching students, Joe (not his real name) had a unique gift (or so he thought). Since he was overly concerned with what other people thought (coach, teammates, parents, spectators, etc.) about his performance, he often engaged in a process I call mind reading when performing.
While Joe was mind reading, he made assumptions about what others were thinking about him. He literally thought that he could tell what others were thinking about him. Joe’s hidden agenda was to avoid embarrassment, to not make mistakes, and have others think he was a good athlete.
This preoccupation with mind reading what others may be thinking about him caused him to play cautiously and avoid mistakes. He was plagued with thoughts such as, “The coach will yank me from the team if I miss an open shot!” or “My team will be disappointed in my performance.”
Joe's performance suffered because he did ...

During contact sports it's the ACL can be injured when an athlete has his foot planted and is struck with a direct force to the knee. You don't have to be an athlete to injure your ACL. Day by day the field of athletics is getting competitive and right nutrition plays a very important role for athletes to achieve their goals. A balanced diet according to ones need is essential for an athlete's body to make sufficient fuel for top performance. In this competitive state there is high pressure laid on athletes to win, this can be done by maintaining desirable body weight, staying physically fit, mentally alert and achieving an optimal nerve-muscle reflexes. Just expert coaching and physical conditioning are not enough, for a training program to succeed balanced sports nutrition should be the key.
No single food or supplement can help an athlete to perform; a right combination of nutrients is required by the body. Just like each team member performs differently in a game, each nutrient has a different role to play in the body.

After watching the USGA's premier golf tournament, the U.S. Open, I began to consider athletes and warriors. Are they one and the same finding themselves on different fields of battle? Homer's Achilles was perhaps the greatest warrior ever. He died from a wound to the one area of his body where he was vulnerable, his foot. Crazy Horse was a warrior chieftain who learned, from observation, how to develop battle plans which proved a tremendous challenge to the United States Cavalry. He died from a wound inflicted by one of his own people. Beowulf slayed the Swamphag's offspring, the Swamphag, and the Dragon, while being mortally wounded by the Dragon. Joan of Arc was a heroin who dressed in men's armour and led French soldiers in a defeat of the English in a major battle. She was later condemned to death and burned at the stake for wearing masculine clothing and being a heretic. The warrior ...

To the same extent that attending to the health needs of the body are the foundation of a good training regimen, mental focus, concentration and visualization are the keys to success. Most people are familiar with the saying that sports is 90% mental and 10% physical. Why is it then that so many athletes fail to give attention to mental training? That 90% figure should be pretty hard to overlook yet it often is. By studying trancendant athletes and sports stars, it becomes apparent that the common edge they have over competition indeed does begin mentally. Jerry West, the NBA Logo, had such a penchant for hitting buzzer beaters he was nicknamed ‘Mr. Clutch’. In one memorable game in which his team was trailing the Knicks with a few seconds left in an NBA Finals game, West took an inbound pass and shot from 60 feet at the buzzer. Knicks ...

Most athletes are born competitors. Since our early years, we have been conditioned to think in terms of "how many," "how much" and "how fast." The cruel twist of fate parallels the wisdom of age with the slowing of the fast-twitch muscles. The athlete who wishes to retain enjoyment in his older years needs cunning as well as brawn to do well, feel well, and be well!
Our primal instincts regarding the ever-upward ascent of our achievements have to withstand the changes in absolute measure (hardly any of us will be faster at sixty than we were at twenty, or even forty). We have to learn to take pride in finesse, in working with our changing bodies in a cooperative dance rather than a wrestling match, and to do so with the fond eye of a lover rather than the stopwatch of our high school coach.
